CRANBERRY TWP — Paige Wojdyla of Cranberry Township won the 2010 Kings Restaurants Tri-State Section Junior Golf Tournament Series Player of the Year Championship recently at Nemacolin Woodlands.
Wojdyla tallied 462 points to win the girls 16-18 age division. She will be a senior at Seneca Valley High School this fall.
AKRON, Ohio — Hunter Mahan took a big step toward joining the elite in golf on Sunday, winning his first World Golf Championship title to lock up a spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team.Four shots behind to start the final round at Firestone, Mahan ran off five birdies on the front nine to take the lead, then had three clutch par saves down the stretch to finish off a 6-under 64 and a two-shot victory over Ryan Palmer.It was the second victory this year for Mahan, and the $1.4 million he earned moved him to No. 2 in the Ryder Cup standings with only the PGA Championship remaining before the top eight Americans qualifying.Tiger Woods will remain atop the world ranking for the 270th consecutive week, despite the worst tournament of his career. BLAINE, Minn. — David Frost made a 25-foot putt for eagle on the 18th hole to finish an 11-under 61 and win the 3M Championship title in record-setting fashion.It was the first career Champions Tour win for Frost, whose 25-under 191 was two shots better than the previous tournament scoring record set by R.W. Eaks in 2008.
MIAMI — Florida Marlins left fielder Chris Coghlan will undergo knee surgery Wednesday and might miss the reason of the season after being hurt during a victory celebration.Coghlan had hoped to return soon and delay surgery until after the season.The 2009 NL Rookie of the Year says recovery time is four to eight weeks.
LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles Sparks forward Tina Thompson became the WNBA's career leading scorer against the San Antonio Silver Stars.Thompson surpassed Lisa Leslie, who retired last season after amassing 6,263 points, by making a 16-foot jump shot in the third quarter. She is the last of the original WNBA players.
