WASHINGTON — The NFL and its players' union discussed a proposal to change to an 18-game regular season during a bargaining session.

The league and the NFL Players Association issued a joint statement about the meeting Tuesday, saying that negotiations "focused on several matters," including the longer regular season, a rookie wage scale and improvements for retired players.

League owners and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell want to expand the regular season from 16 games to 18, and cut the preseason from four games to two.

The current collective bargaining agreement expires in March.

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State's Mark Dantonio plans to coach his team Saturday when the No. 24 Spartans host No. 11 Wisconsin, two weeks after he was hospitalized following a mild heart attack.Looking upbeat and even wisecracking about eating more vegetables, Dantonio announced his intentions Tuesday after showing up at the team's weekly news conference.

VERONA — Butler Country Club pro Rob McClellan carded a 4-under 138 to win the Dick's Sporting Goods Tour Championship Tuesday at Green Oaks Country Club.McClellan shot consecutive rounds of 69 to win by three strokes over Kevin Shields of Sewickley Heights Golf Club.John Aubrey Sr. of Aubrey's Dubbs Dred and Joe Boros of Treesdale Golf and Country Club were among four golfers tying for 12th.

PITTSBURGH — Evgeni Malkin scored for Pittsburgh and the Penguins beat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-1 Tuesday night.Dustin Jeffrey, Nick Johnson and Mark Letestu also had goals for Pittsburgh, and Paul Martin had two assists. Kyle Beach scored for Chicago, which fell to 1-3 in the preseason. The Penguins are 4-0.The game matched the past two Stanley Cup champions — but the lineups did not. Malkin played, but fellow Penguins stars Sidney Crosby, Marc-Andre Fleury and Brooks Orpik were among the scratches. Chicago chose not to dress, among others, Jonathan Toews, Duncan Keith, Marian Hossa and Marty Turco.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University running back Akeem Satterfield is averaging 162.6 yards rushing through three games, good for second in NCAA Division II.Satterfield trails only Franklyn Quiteh of Bloomsburg, who is averaging 168 yards per game. Satterfield was held to 56 yards on 27 carries in Saturday's 17-0 loss at Indiana (Pa.).
