PITTSBURGH — Former Slippery Rock University football players John Sikora and Terry Grossetti have joined the first-year Pittsburgh Power Arena Football League franchise.
Sikora, a football coach at Central Cambria High School, a former All-PSAC West lineman and two-time Division II All-American, was a member of two ArenaBowl championship teams. He was a two-way lineman for the Albany Firebirds and Chicago Rush.
Sikora joins the Power as its offensive and defensive line coach.
Grossetti, a wide receiver, ranks 10th on SRU's all-time receiving list with 98 catches. He played briefly with the Rochester Raiders of the Indoor Football League and has signed with the Power as a wide receiver.
The Power opens its regular season at 8 p.m. March 11 vs. Philadelphia in the Consol Energy Center.
JACKSON TWP — Seneca Valley girls softball first baseman Megan Buletko was selected to compete in the Queen of Diamonds Showcase North Jan. 8 and 9 at Kent State University.There are only three Queen of Diamonds Showcases nationwide. The South and North events chose 264 athletes from more than 2,000 applicants.Selections are based on ability, potential, academics, graduation year, coaches requests and referrals.
SLIPPERY ROCK — Sophomore midfielder Gabrielle Malishchak and junior defender Erin Moran of the Slippery Rock University field hockey team received All-PSAC recognition.Malishchak was named to the first team after scoring a team-leading six goals and 14 points. Moran made the second team, her four defensive saves tying for sixth in Division II. She scored four goals and eight points as well.
BENNINGTON, Vt. — Only 142 people showed up to see Skidmore play Southern Vermont, most of them friends and family members of the players who were eager to start a Thanksgiving break.Little did they know they would see a game like only two others in NCAA men's basketball history — a seven-overtime marathon.Skidmore beat Southern Vermont 128-123 Tuesday night, the longest game ever played at the men's Division III level.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Mike Krzyzewski’s latest milestone win came with an impressive dismantling of one of the best teams in the country.Top-ranked Duke’s 82-68 victory over No. 4 Kansas State Tuesday night in the championship game of the O’Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic was Coach K’s 800th win at Duke.As usual, he deflected the attention from himself to the school that he has worked at since 1981 and the many players who have scored those points and defended all those opponents.“It means I’m at a great school,” said Krzyzewski, who became the fifth coach to win 800 games at one school.
