PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates claimed minor league left-hander Aaron Thompson off waivers and designated left-hander Wil Ledezma for assignment to create a roster spot.

Thompson was left unprotected by the Washington Nationals, who acquired him from Florida for first baseman Nick Johnson in 2009. Thompson, who made 26 starts at Double-A Harrisburg last season, was a first-round pick by the Marlins in 2005.

The Pirates also signed infielder Garrett Atkins to a minor league contract and invited him to their major league spring training camp. Atkins played for the Rockies from 2003-09.

In a minor league trade, the Pirates acquired infielder-outfielder Corey Wimberley from Oakland for right-hander Ryan Kelly. Wimberley led the Pacific Coast League with 56 stolen bases while hitting .284 for Sacramento last season.

NEW YORK — Bud Greenspan, the filmmaker whose documentaries often soared as triumphantly as the Olympic athletes he chronicled for more than six decades, died at his home in New York City. He was 84.He died Saturday from complications of Parkinson's disease, companion Nancy Beffa said.Greenspan received lifetime achievement awards from the Directors Guild of America and the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, as well as a Peabody and the Olympic Order award. His best-known work was “The Olympiad,” the culmination of 10 years of research, more than 3 million feet of rare, archival film, hundreds of interviews and visits to more than 30 nations. The 10-part series was aired in more than 80 countries.

NEW YORK — Seton Hall guard Jeremy Hazell was shot and wounded Christmas night by someone who tried to rob him, a school spokesman confirmed Sunday.Hazell, who has been away from the basketball court since undergoing wrist surgery Dec. 2, was kept overnight at a Manhattan hospital as a precaution and was resting at home in Harlem late Sunday, school athletic spokesman Matt Sweeney said. Hazell was shot under his right arm.

SAITAMA, Japan — Japan's Koki Kameda unanimously outpointed Venezuala's Alexander Munoz on Sunday to take the vacant WBA bantamweight title.Kameda, who knocked Munoz to the canvas in the final round, improved to 24-1. Munoz is 35-4.
