IN BRIEF

ARLINGTON, Texas — Texas Rangers slugger Josh Hamilton is able to run and throw as he recovers from a broken right shoulder expected to sideline the reigning AL MVP for up to two months.

Swinging a bat is still out for the left-handed hitter because of the stress it would put on the shoulder.

“He's feeling better. His biggest problem is finishing,” Rangers manager Ron Washington said of Hamilton's swing. “As far as all his other movements, it's great. But the finish is the thing.”

Hamilton refused to speculate on a timetable for his return.

“I'm not going to say ahead of schedule or behind schedule or anything,” Hamilton said before Friday's game against Kansas City. “The more I can use it in everyday life and try to get back to normal, the better it's going to be, the faster it's going to be.”

MINNEAPOLIS — Rain spared the Minnesota Twins from playing short-handed again, with Justin Morneau and Delmon Young still ailing and out of the lineup for Friday's game before the steady precipitation prompted the postponement. The sputtering defending division champions are counting on better, brighter days ahead.“It hasn't been a fun start for everybody, so hopefully we can move past this and put it behind us,” Morneau said as he left the clubhouse, a few minutes after the game was called. The weather is expected to be better this weekend for the remaining two games at Target Field against the league-leading Cleveland Indians, and manager Ron Gardenhire said Morneau should be recovered enough from a stomach virus to try to return on Saturday afternoon.

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Scott Russell broke his Kansas Relays record for javelin throw with a distance of 268 feet, 11 inches on Friday.Russell holds the Canadian record in the event with a mark of 276 feet, 11 inches, set in 2005, but he has not been training full time in the past year because of a knee injury. He set the previous meet record in 2008 with a throw of 267 feet, 6 inches. The meet also marked Russell's first competitive throw since the 2009 Kansas Relays, he said.

Westwood had a 10-under total in the Asian Tour event.
