BELLEFONTE — Forrest Christmann of Slippery Rock placed fourth in Greco-Roman and sixth in Freestyle 215-pound division and sixth in the Freestyle at the 215-pound division at the Pennsylvania Amateur Wrestling Federation State Championships.Christmann, a sophomore at Slippery Rock High School, has been selected to represent the state at the Junior National Duals in Oklahoma City, Okla. CLARION — Knoch graduate and Clarion University freshman thrower Allyson Cress has been named a U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Atlantic Region women's shot putter.Cress placed third in the shot put at the PSAC Championships with a throw of 49 feet, 9.75 inches. INDIANAPOLIS — Commissioner Roger Goodell says the NFL already is seeing the negative impact the lockout has had on the league.Goodell cites the weaker TV ratings for April's draft, with roughly 4 million fewer viewers than in 2010, and a drop in traffic on the league's website, calling it “a noticeable change.” He says there also has been a financial impact, and that “fans want certainty. We can't underestimate that the fans are going through challenges just in the general economy.”
LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Lakers have reached an agreement in principle with former Cleveland coach Mike Brown to succeed Phil Jackson, the team said.Brown will get a four-year deal worth roughly $18 million.Brown jumped to the front of the line of candidates to replace the 11-time NBA champion Jackson, who retired earlier this month. Brown will be the 22nd coach of the Lakers, whose 16 NBA titles trail only the Boston Celtics' 17 in league history.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Paul Splittorff, the big, blonde left-hander who became the winningest pitcher in Kansas City Royals history and a popular broadcaster for the team, died of complications from skin cancer. He was 64.Splittorff spent his entire 15-year career in Kansas City. A tall, bespectacled lefty with a high leg kick, he retired during the 1984 season with a club-record 166 victories.
