CLARION — Four Butler County natives have earned scholar-athlete honors at Clarion University.
Seneca Valley grads Megan Condit and Emma Carter (women's volleyball) and Matt Koerper (football) joined Mars High graduate Cameron Cress (football) in being recognized.
To be named a 2013 scholar-athlete, student athletes must achieve a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher, have two consecutive semesters of a 3.2 grade point average or higher in the spring and fall terms of 2012, or be a freshman or new transfer who achieved a 3.2 grade point average or higher in the fall 2012 term.
BRADENTON, Fla. — The Pittsburgh Pirates are giving two youngsters a fair shot at winning the fifth starter spot in their rotation.Left-hander Jeff Locke and right-hander Kyle McPherson were impressive in their first outings of spring training. Neither got a chance to pitch Tuesday because the Pirates' game against the Baltimore Orioles was rained out. There was no initial indication if there would be a makeup.

The Los Angeles Kings traded Simon Gagne back to the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday for a conditional draft pick, sending the struggling left wing back to the city where he had his greatest NHL success.Gagne spent his first 10 NHL seasons with the Flyers, but won his first Stanley Cup title last season in Los Angeles after a late-playoff return from a concussion. COLUMBUS, Ohio — Less than 24 hours after picking up a career-best three assists in a loss at Nashville, the Dallas Stars dealt right wing Michael Ryder and a third-round draft pick to the Montreal Canadiens for right wing Erik Cole in a swap of veteran forwards.The teams confirmed the trade Tuesday night.
