MUDDY CREEK TWP — Moraine State Park programs for August include:

• Regatta at Lake Arthur, 10 a.m. Aug. 1 and 2.

This annual event staged in the Lakeview area at the park will feature entertainment, canoe and kayak races, children's activities, a classic car cruise, fishing tournament, hot air balloons, Moraine Marketplace, hiking, swimming, sailboat races, historic oil well demonstrations, fishing for children, fireworks and the "Whatever Floats Your Boat Race."

• "Historic Oil Well Operation," 10 a.m. Aug. 1.

The abandoned 1900s oil well and pumping engine that have been restored to working order will be operated by park staff from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The central powerhouse site is located beyond the Forestry & Regional office building on Park Road (Old Route 422), off Route 528.

• "Kayak Nature Float," 10 a.m. Aug. 8.

This entry-level kayaking program is designed to meet the needs of those more interested in an easy peaceful experience rather than a long hard paddle. Meet the park naturalist at the Old 422 launch area off old Route 422.

Participants may take their own kayaks, or borrow one of Moraine's kayaks. To reserve a kayak or register, call 724-368-8811.

• "Magical Monarch Butterflies," 1:30 p.m. Aug. 9.

Join the park naturalist at the McDanel's Launch Pavilion 7 on the North Shore to participate in a program about these insects. The program will include a short hike to explore nearby monarch butterfly habitat.

• "Guide to Geocaching & GPS," 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15.

Meet the park naturalist at the Pleasant Valley picnic area on the South Shore to learn about and take part in some geocaching. Several GPS units will be available for participants to use during the program.

• "Hummingbirds ¿ The Jewels of the Air," 2 p.m. Aug. 15.

Meet the park naturalist and guest speaker Harry Schmeider to view a digital photo slide show of the ruby-throated hummingbird and discuss the many different species of hummingbirds that fly to North America.

Take photos of hummingbirds to share. A photo display table will be set up. Meet at Pavilion 7 at McDanel's Launch on the North Shore.

• "Learn to Kayak" 1 p.m. Aug. 16.

Park staff and members of the Western Pennsylvania Paddle Sport Association will be available to teach some basic kayaking skills. Meet at the McDanel's launch on the North Shore.

• "Star Gazing Party," 7:30 p.m. Aug. 21.

Join the park naturalist and members of the Amateur Astronomers Association of Pittsburgh for a hands-on star gazing party at the bike rental station on the North Shore. AAAP will have several telescopes to try out.

• "Bike and Learn," 1:30 p.m. Aug. 22.

Join park staff at the bike rental station on the North Shore for a guided bike ride and discussion of the wildlife that calls Moraine State Park home. Participants can take their own bicycles or contact the concessionaire at 724-368-9011 for rental information.

• "Explore the Source," 10 a.m. Aug. 23.

Join the park naturalist at the upper 528-boat launch, off Route 528, for a moderately strenuous kayaking tour to explore Muddy Creek.

• "Work Off the Day Kayak Paddle," 6 p.m. Aug. 26.

Meet the park naturalist at the Bear Run boat launch on the South Shore for a fast-paced, guided kayak trip designed for those who want to get in a workout while they paddle. Participants may bring their own kayak or borrow one of Moraine's. To reserve a kayak or to register, call 724-368-8811.

• "Walk with the Mammals," 1:30 p.m. Aug. 29.

Join the park naturalist at the Lakeview Beach area Pavilion 4 for a program that will discuss some of the similarities and differences among different types of mammals and their habitats. The program will include a short hike to look for evidence of these mammals.

• "Nature Watch Kayaking," 10 a.m. Aug. 30.

This entry-level kayaking program is designed to meet the needs of those more interested in an easy, peaceful experience rather than a long hard paddle. Meet the park naturalist at the McDanel's launch area on the North Shore to learn about and experience the peace and beauty that Moraine has to offer.
