Goings on at the Maridon Temporary 'Fruit' exhibit featured
"Fabulous Fruit" is being exhibited at the Maridon Museum, 322 N. McKean St., now through the end of August.
The Maridon is showing a special temporary exhibit set up in its side-gallery. The display highlights fruit and its importance to Asian culture not only through Asian art but also in Meissen porcelain as well.
n Continuing at the museum is an exhibit of samurai dolls. The 19 pieces will be on display through Aug. 31.
• A Japanese summer language camp will take place at the Maridon from 9 to 11 a.m. Aug. 10 to 14. This camp is open to first and second graders.
Students will be exposed to the language and culture of Japan. Topics to be discussed include geography, colors, shapes, weather, family, food and clothing. Participants will enjoy crafts, games and songs. Fee is $25. Reservations are required.
• A class in keumboo — the Korean art that uses precious metal and clay to create gold-embossed objects — is planned for 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 11. This highly interactive program is open to those ages 13 to 18. Students attending the event will create a pendant. This class is free to the public. Reservations are required.
• "After Life," the second film in the Maridon's film series, will be shown at 7 p.m. Sept. 24. The 1999 Japanese film is 118 minutes long and is set in a way-station where the souls of the recently deceased are processed before entering heaven. Admission is free. Reservations are required.
• The Maridon's annual "Treasures or Trinkets: Appraisals" is schedule for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 10. Six qualified antique dealers will be on hand to give verbal appraisals of family treasures. Cost is $5 per item, limited to 10 items per person. No reservations are required.
• Also planned is the "Shichi-Go-San" or "7-5-3" program, a Japanese children's festival that celebrates girls who are age 3, boys who are age 5, and girls and boys who are age 7.
This event will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. Nov. 14. Dixie Lipnichan will lead children in a story, learning Japanese words, making a craft and playing games.
Children ages 3 to 10 are invited to participate in this free program. Reservations are required. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
