SLIPPERY ROCK TWP, Lawrence County — McConnells Mill State Park has the following programs scheduled:

• Campfire Cuisine, 2 p.m., Saturday.

See various methods of outdoor cooking demonstrated and pick up some tips for satisfying hunger in the outdoors. Meet the park naturalist in the courtyard beside the old mill. Park at Kildoo Picnic Area; hike down to the old mill.

• Owl Prowl, 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Join the search for nocturnal surprises on Hell's Hollow trail. Allow 15 minutes to get to Hell's Hollow (no facilities) if coming from the old mill. Take a flashlight and wear sturdy shoes and meet park staff at the Hell's Hollow parking lot.

• Wild Teas, 2 p.m., Aug. 8.

Come discover some wild plants used in the past and present. Meet in the courtyard beside the old mill.

• Geology & Industrial History, 2 p.m. Aug. 9.

Join park staff for this relatively easy hike to the cascading waterfalls and limekiln in Hell's Hollow, passing along the way the slag piles of an iron furnace site, mine seeps, the flume from a collapsed limestone cave and a small quarry. Meet at the Hell's Hollow parking lot; no facilities.

• Native Plants, 2 p.m., Aug. 16.

Lawrence County Master Gardeners will talk about the benefits of gardening with native plants, some habitats in our region, and the flowers that are found in them. Meet at the mill courtyard, rain or shine.

• Edible Plants, 2 p.m. Aug. 22.

Many Pennsylvania plants are edible, even tasty. The group will seek out some of these on a walk through the woods. Meet park staff at the courtyard of the mill.

• Hike Along the Millstream, 1 p.m. Aug. 23.

The summer series of hikes continues with a two-mile hike over moderately rough terrain along Slippery Rock Creek. Meet at the naturalist at the mill courtyard.

• Art in Nature, 2 p.m. Aug. 29.

Join the park naturalist for a look at collecting and pressing flowers. Meet at the Kildoo Picnic Area, ready to design and create your own work.

• Slippery Rock Gorge Trail Hike, 1 p.m. Aug. 30.

For a most challenging guided hike, meet park staff at Eckert Bridge parking lot (no facilities) to hike the Slippery Rock Gorge Trail (Part of the North Country Trail) 6.2 miles to Hell's Hollow, where a park vehicle will shuttle participants back to Eckert Bridge. Allow a minimum of 4.5 hours for the hike, and take food and drink.

• Whole Grain Goodness, 2 p.m., Sept. 5.

Meet in the mill courtyard to participate in a corn grinding demonstration and see grains in action.

• Hell's Hollow Walk, 2 p.m. Sept. 12.

Join the park naturalist for a leisurely paced walk along a trail in the park. Meet at the Hell's Hollow parking lot

• McConnells Mill 17th Annual Heritage Festival, Sept. 26 and 27.

The festival celebrates the operational time period of the historical gristmill, from 1852 to 1928. Costumed vendors will display crafts inspired by this time. Bluegrass music and free tours of the mill will be offered.

A Civil War encampment and arts and crafts demonstrations are planned.
