"Shamel House, 1962, photograph 1964" is a modern archival print from a vintage negative being shown in "Palm Springs Modern: Photographs by Julius Shulman" starting Sept. 19 at the Carnegie Museum of Art.

PITTSBURGH — The Carnegie Museum of Art will present "Palm Springs Modern: Photographs by Julius Shulman" from Sept. 19 to Jan. 31 in the Heinz Architectural Center.

The exhibition offers visitors a tour of the mid-century architecture and elegant lifestyles in Palm Springs, Calif. The exhibit features nearly 100 original photographs, both in black and white and in color, that photographer Shulman took of iconic designs by Modernist architects.

Also presented are a dozen original drawings, including renderings of the famed Kaufmann House designed by architect Richard Neutra as a winter residence for the Kaufmann family of Pittsburgh.

The exhibition focuses on Shulman's encyclopedic documentation of progressive architecture in the Palm Springs area, from his first photographs of Richard Neutra's Miller House in 1937 to images of John Lautner's Elrod House taken in 2007. It honors this remarkable photographer who died July 15 at age 98.

The Museum of Art at 4400 Forbes Avenue in Oakland is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays to Saturdays; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays; noon to 5 p.m. Sundays, and closed Mondays and major holidays.

Admission is $15 for adults, $12 for senior citizens age 65 and older, $11 for students with ID and children ages 3 to 18, and free for children younger than 3 and museum members.
