Michael Berenstain

PITTSBURGH — Michael Berenstain, author/illustrator of The Berenstain Bears series of books and son of series creators Stan and Jan Berenstain, will appear at two events Sunday in Pittsburgh.

At two Thanksgiving-themed events, children can meet life-sized, costumed Mama and Papa Bear while the author/illustrator reads from "The Berenstain Bears Give Thanks."

The events, which are free, will include a drawing demonstration.

The first event is a book signing from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Joseph-Beth Booksellers Pittsburgh, 2705 E. Carson St.

The second event will have a reading along with the drawing demonstration and costumed characters and be held from 9:50 to 11:10 a.m. and 11:10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Allegheny Center Alliance Church, 250 E. Ohio St.

Twelve new Berenstain Bears books, written by Michael Berenstain, with the first titles releasing this month, are softcover picture books that communicate a range of inspirational topics such as loving your neighbor, practicing kindness, being thankful and sharing the Christmas spirit.

Stan and Jan Berenstain published their first book about a bear family who lived "deep in Bear Country" in 1962 under the editorial oversight of Dr. Seuss.

In 1974, they started their own line of books about everyday family experiences. Their youngest son, Michael, joined his parents many years ago, writing several books and becoming the exclusive designer and illustrator of a series of large picture books.

Since Stan Berenstain's death in 2005, Michael and Jan work as an author/illustrator team for their books.
