Carnegie Museums celebrate holidays

PITTSBURGH — Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History will celebrate the holidays with a variety of programs.

Following is a complete list of events; all activities are included in the price of admission, unless otherwise indicated.

• Neapolitan Presepio, Friday through Jan. 10, Hall of Architecture in the Museum of Art.

Neapolitan Presepio has been a Pittsburgh holiday tradition since 1957. Handcrafted by artisans between 1700 and 1830, the presepio teems with lifelike figures and colorful details that re-create the Nativity within a panorama of 18th-century Italian village life.

More than 100 human and angelic figures, along with animals, accessories, and architectural elements, cover a 250-square-foot display.

Guided tours will be available Dec. 4 through Jan. 10.

• Holiday Tree Display: "Useful Beauty" celebrating the decorative arts, Dec. 4 to Jan. 10, Hall of Architecture, Museum of Art.

Five 20-foot individual Colorado spruce trees will line the Hall of Architecture, each individually adorned with themes that celebrate the decorative arts, in honor of the reopening of the Ailsa Mellon Bruce Galleries. An additional 10-foot tree will be located at the Carriage Drive Entrance.

• Holiday concerts at 1 p.m. in the Hall of Architecture: Brooke Annibale, Dec. 5; Chatham Choir, Dec. 6; Robert and Roberta Erickson, handbells, Dec. 12; Center for Young Musicians, Dec. 13; Joy Ike, Dec. 19; Frank Cappelli, Dec. 20.

• Winter in the Discovery Room in the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Hours are 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesdays to Fridays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays, and 1 to 4 p.m. Sundays.

The Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History will observe the following altered hours: closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day.
