Jennings Environmental Education Center, Route 528 near the intersection of Routes 8 and 173, Slippery Rock, will have a day of snowshoeing for beginners on Jan. 9 during Winter Trails Day. The programs will be from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 3 p.m. Each session will include the history of snowshoes, an introduction to the sport and a winter activity hike. Equipment will be provided although personal equipment is welcomed. To occupy children under 8-years-old, staff will be available to conduct winter activities and crafts in concurrence with each session. Registration is required by calling the center at 724-794-6011 or by visiting the Web site, www.dcnr.state.pa.us/calendar/list.

<B>Powdermill Nature Reserve</B> at 1847 Route 381 in Rector, Westmoreland County, the biological research station of Carnegie Museum of Natural History, is the site of winter nature hikes at 1 p.m. Saturday and Dec. 26; Jan. 2, 16, 23 and 30. Admission is free; no registration required. A program on "Mammals in Winter" is planned for Sunday. Call 724-593-6105 or visit the Web site, www.powdermill.org.
