Slippery Rock school board president: ‘I am not resigning’

SLIPPERY ROCK TWP — Prior to adjourning the Monday, Nov. 25, meeting, Slippery Rock Area School District board president Heather Scott said she is not resigning from her position, after being asked if she was going to by board member Mark Taylor.

The school board also voted Monday to adopt a new school services callout website for the year, which will replace the current system “as soon as possible.”

A board meeting earlier this month was marked by calls for Scott to resign after she posted a message on social media criticizing President-elect Donald Trump, as well as those who voted for him, due to his anti-abortion stance and policies on immigration and the economy.

Monday’s meeting was markedly less crowded than the Nov. 11 meeting. The only person who signed up to speak was board member Sara Whitman. In her address to the board, Whitman relayed a quote she gave to a news publication regarding her opinion of Scott’s prior actions.

Callout system

Susan Miller, assistant superintendent of the school district, said the new callout system, called ParentSquare, will better allow the district announce weather delays or school cancellations than its current system, Infinite Campus.

The district will continue using Infinite Campus as its student information system through the remainder of the school year, while using ParentSquare for weather announcements, before switching over entirely next school year. The callout system costs $900 for the year, and the use of its student information system is estimated to cost around $8,000 per year once adopted. Infinite Campus costs between $5,000 and $6,000 per year, Miller said.

“We ran into issues regarding callouts and announcing things like delays,” Miller said of Infinite Campus. “We now have explored ParentSquare as a more-efficient means of contacting parents … The weather in Western Pennsylvania is not good, and we’re anticipating some inclement weather coming soon.”

This story was updated at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 26 to clarify that a controversial message posted by Heather Scott on social media referred to other policy issues in addition to abortion.
