Butler County's great daily newspaper

Jeer:

Pittsburgh is home to the Pirates, Steelers and Penguins, but it's not home to the cult classic horror film "Night of the Living Dead," which was filmed near Evans City in 1968.

But few people outside Butler County would connect Evans City with the famous film. That's because the usual line that is voiced when the film is discussed is that " 'Night of the Living Dead' was filmed in Pittsburgh." Unfortunately, that occurred again a few days ago in an Associated Press article. Media should strive to be more precise, considering the distance between Pittsburgh and Evans City - the two locations are not even in the same county.

Perhaps part of the reason for that association is that George Romero, the film icon who produced "Night" and its two sequels, "Dawn of the Dead" and "Day of the Dead," lives in Pittsburgh's Shadyside neighborhood. Shortly, Romero will be embarking on the filming of a third sequel, "Land of the Dead," perhaps in the Pittsburgh area, perhaps in Canada, which could be more economical for the filmmaker despite legislation signed into law within the past month by Gov. Ed Rendell that offers filmmakers a 20 percent tax credit.

Romero mustered all of his filmmaking skill and ingenuity to transform low-budet "Night of the Living Dead" into a film that already has spanned generations. And, for more than 35 years, Pittsburgh has capitalized on the film's reputation while Evans City has been ignored.

Evans City and its neighboring townships are much at fault for that. They have not sought to capitalize on the fact that it was in that area where Romero's zombies first wreaked terror in the "Dead" series. A person entering Evans City for the purpose of seeing the cemetery where some of the first "Night" scenes were filmed must stop and inquire about the location of that cemetery. There is nothing in the town to indicate the community's association with the film.

Beyond Romero's ties to Pittsburgh, the Steel City has no real bragging rights regarding "Night of the Living Dead," although the city has not sought to correct those who make the errant association.

"Night of the Living Dead" is Evans City and its surrounding area. "Night of the Living Dead" is Butler County.

The Pirates, Steelers and Penguins are Pittsburgh.
