Butler County's great daily newspaper

Jeer:

Neither happened in Butler County, but residents of this county can share in the outrage over two incidents that were in the news over the past week. The incidents display arrogance and irresponsibility of a kind that all right-thinking people can detest.

There was the surburban Pittsburgh school bus driver who allegedly encouraged 10 students to jump around, throw things and misbehave on her moving bus so she could make an audition videotape for the CBS reality television show "Survivor."

A camera inside the bus caught the Jan. 6 incident on tape, and, to its credit, the bus company gave the footage to police.

There was no indication that officials of the Elizabeth Forward School District, where the incident occurred, knew about the bus driver's plan.

The driver, who was identified as Maureen Monaghan, has been charged with recklessly endangering children. She should count herself fortunate that her misguided plan did not result in injuries or worse - a scenario under which she could be facing much more serious charges.

Then there was District Judge Ernest Marraccini, who has been charged with misconduct for tossing out 30 traffic ticket appeals May 25 after indicating that he didn't feel like hearing them.

The state Judicial Conduct Board on Wednesday filed six misconduct charges against Marraccini, 60, who on the day in question was filling in for Forest Hills District Judge Susan Evashavik.

Edgewood Police Chief Paul Wood filed a complaint that led to the charges. If convicted, Marraccini could face reprimand, suspension with or without pay, or removal from the bench.

The incidents in question seem too inappropriate to have even been contemplated by the bus driver and district judge. It's troubling that the actions were not only considered but, apparently, actually carried out.

If the charges are proven in upcoming proceedings, punishment is definitely warranted.
