Butler County's great daily newspaper

Jeer:

Some people don't learn a lesson the first time - or even the second or third time. Hopefully two men who were sentenced in Butler County Court Tuesday will learn one in the 15 to 27 months they'll be spending in state prison.

First, there is Todd Anzaldi, 35, of Natrona Heights, who pleaded guilty before Judge George Hancher to his fourth drunken-driving charge in seven years. Anzaldi was arrested by city police Dec. 6, 2003. In addition to the drunken-driving charge, he pleaded guilty to giving false identification to law enforcement officials.

Then there is Robert Johnston, 28, of Butler, who pleaded guilty before Hancher to his third drunken-driving charge in a decade. He was arrested by the city police on Feb. 18, 2004, at which time he also was driving with a suspended license.

Hefty fines were meted out to both men - $1,700 to Anzaldi and $3,500 to Johnston - and Anzaldi also will spend 12 months on probation after completion of his prison time.

But the bigger issue is whether either of these men should be allowed to get behind the wheel of a vehicle any more.

Many people are arrested for drunken driving and learn a lesson that they never forget by way of that first arrest. Anzaldi and Johnston have demonstrated that they have little or no regard for the law, themselves or the other lives they endanger by operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

They should consider themselves lucky regarding the length of their prison time. The fact is that they deserve even more time behind prison bars to build a resolve not to drive drunk again.
