Cheer:

A small measure of belated common sense could be coming to Medicare and Medicaid. On Friday, the House approved an amendment to prohibit the government for paying for impotence drugs such as Viagra, Cialis and Levitra.

The proposed change would save an estimated $2 billion over 10 years. Though not insignificant, the savings is not a solution to the funding crises facing Medicare and Medicaid.

Still, the measure represents a common-sense approach expressed well by the amendment's sponsor Rep. Steven King, R-Iowa when he said, "Medicare and Medicaid were established to provide lifesaving medication to the truly needy."

He's right. The drugs should never have been paid for by Medicare or Medicaid.
