Start 2006 in a positive way by attending Ring in the Arts

Butler's second Ring in the Arts New Year's celebration might be challenged a bit by rain and snow showers, but it doesn't appear that winter will pack a potent-enough punch to in any way derail the many activities planned for welcoming 2006.

That's good news. It means people from throughout the county — and people from beyond its borders — should consider converging on this city tomorrow evening to enjoy the many opportunities for fellowship, merriment and enjoyment that will be available before and after the midnight year change.

Ring in the Arts begins at 6 p.m. Saturday but, judging from all that is planned, including fireworks beginning at midnight, people will be in the city well after the start of 2006 enjoying some of the things the city has to offer.

Amid it all will be an ongoing learning experience for the event's planners, who no doubt envision a time when Ring in the Arts will rival Pittsburgh's First Night Celebration as a premier New Year's extravaganza.

For Butler, the first two years of Ring in the Arts have been, and will be, anything but shabby. Businesses, city leaders and the event's volunteers are exhibiting a refreshing show of harmony in trying to be a valuable component in regard to what has been planned.

And also refreshing is how much the local celebration will involve children. Parents will not have to find a baby sitter on New Year's Eve; there will be cartoons, face painting, crafts, magic and prizes to occupy their time at Ring in the Arts.

No doubt children also will be in awe over downtown churches ringing their bells simultaneously to usher in the new year, followed by a fireworks display.

And, what would a new year's celebration be without resolutions? That's why Morgan Center is hosting a resolutions center at which people can not only make resolutions for the upcoming 12 months, but also view the community's resolutions made at the first Ring in the Arts on New Year's Eve a year ago.

Those attending the New Year's Eve activities also need not spend time cooking and eating at home prior to coming downtown; approximately 14 restaurants will be open for Ring in the Arts, providing plenty of inside or on-the-go meal possibilities for people's different budgets.

But one of the greatest things about this night of many attractions is the cost of participating. Buttons that will serve as admission to Ring in the Arts events cost only $10 each; for $25, a family of two adults and two children will have access to all of the activities.

By current entertainment-price standards, those entrance fees are very reasonable.

The weather cooperated for the first Ring in the Arts, allowing a firm foundation to be put in place for this year. Now, what is needed for tomorrow is for the predicted rain and snow showers to bypass the county, or at least make a quick exit.

The new year hopefully will provide many positive opportunities for the people of the city and the rest of Butler County. Ring in the Arts will be a wonderful way to give the year a good start.
