Slippery Rock should feel pride over high school project result
What began as a controversial proposal in the Slippery Rock School District has been transformed into a completed $6.5 million project that merits the district's pride.
Discussion, uncertainty and controversy consumed the two years prior to the school board's vote in late 2003 to start serious planning for the project — construction of a new gym and other renovations and additions to the high school.
Now, about three years later, students arriving at the school today for the first day of classes were treated to a bright, colorful new look and new opportunities that should enhance the atmosphere of the school day.
The new look provides an upbeat environment welcoming hard work in the classroom and in numerous physical activities.
Some district residents will continue to grumble about the project's real estate tax impact and question whether the district could have opted to scale back some aspects of the project.
However, over the long run, those board members responsible for the way in which the project was carried out will be judged as correct for having had the project done right the first time.
In addition to having the new facilities in place at this time, having completed the project now will represent a significant savings over what it would have cost five, 10 or 15 years hence.
Meanwhile, effective immediately, more people can enjoy events held at the gym, which seats 1,000 spectators. The former gym's seating capacity was only 500.
Students will enjoy the benefits of a new fitness room, two new classrooms and training rooms located in the basement of the new gym.
The first welcoming note in regard to the work that has been done is evident from the moment students arrive at the school. There's a new main entrance that includes a new large, bright commons area lined with trophy cases — symbols of achievements and pride — and boasting a student mosaic made up of 26,000 pieces of tile.
The 4- by 8-foot mosaic includes a rocket, the school's mascot.
Other improvements that will be noticed by students include science lab and CAD upgrades and renovated air conditioning.
Electrical system improvements, which won't be noticeable to the students, nevertheless are important to the school's trouble-free operation over the long term and will relieve some of the stress on taxpayers' wallets and pocketbooks over time.
There was a time when the project appeared as if it never would be given the go-ahead. But based on the quality of the improvements that are now in place, the extended debate, uncertainty and controversy apparently were to the district's benefit.
Many school systems have encountered opposition when planning major construction and renovation projects. But most of that opposition evaporates once the project is completed and a new, positive attitude and symbol of community pride emerges.
It is to be hoped that the Slippery Rock School District experiences such a transformation, even among the most vocal opponents.
Overall, the district has good cause for being proud of what has been accomplished. In terms of school spirit, students should be grateful for the opportunities and bragging rights that the new, improved facilities in the classrooms and gym will foster.
