Spithaler secures crown

BUFFALO TWP — Jack Sodeman Jr. found victory lane, but Brandon Spithaler took home the big prize Friday night at Lernerville Speedway.

The 22-year-old Evans City driver claimed his first career Sprint points championship at the Sarver oval by winning his heat race and finishing fourth in the feature.

Brandon Matus, his closest competitor in points, also won his heat race, but placed sixth in the feature. Spithaler began the evening — Lernerville’s final night of points racing — with a six-point lead over Matus.

Spithaler won the points title despite winning only one feature race all season. He consistently finished among the top five each Friday.

Rod George finished second to Sodeman in the Sprint feature while Sarver’s Carl Boswer took third. Bowser also finished third in points.

Corey McPherson of Tarentum wrapped up the Sportsman Stock points title over AJ Flick by winning the feature Friday night. Flick took second in the race and in points.

Lernerville’s two other points champions this season — Alex Ferree of Saxonburg in Late Models and Mat Williamson of St. Catharines, Ontario, in Modifieds — clinched their titles last week.

They both found victory lane one more time Friday night. Ferree beat South Park’s Jared Miley to the checkered flag while Williamson beat out Brian Swartzlander.

There were 78 cars in the pits, including 23 Sprints and 22 Sportsman Stocks.
