The Society for Contemporary Crafts presents "DIY: A Revolution in Handicrafts" through Sept. 10, and as part of that exhibit, "Maria" by Seth Papac consisting of many materials including various golds, silver, brass, steel, rubber, plastic and nylon.

PITTSBURGH — The Society for Contemporary Crafts presents "DIY: A Revolution in Handicrafts" in the main galleries through March 26, 2011.

An opening reception will take place from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Sept. 10 at the gallery at 2100 Smallman St.

This major exhibition will explore issues relating to environmentalism, social responsibility, politics, community and an appreciation for all things handmade.

The show highlights works created by 15 artists from across the United States as well as Canada and England.

Evolving out of the need for cost-saving lifestyles, DIY (or "Do It Yourself") emerged in the United States as a concept in the 1950s, took root during the 1970s and could be identified as an international movement by the 1990s.

Activities related to this exhibit include:

• Dialogue with the artists, noon to 2 p.m., Sept. 11.

• Subu Inc. demonstrating the process of bookbinding, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 9.

• Findings Your Way: Creating Hand-Made Findings for Jewelry workshops, Oct. 3, 20 and 27 and Nov. 3 and 10.

• Altered Readymades workshop, transforming old clothes into tote bags, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 9.

• Cosy Knits demonstration, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 8.

• Miss Chief demonstration of the art of button making, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 12.
