Acrobats get SRU series off to flying start

A contortion balancing act is part of the Golden Dragon Acrobats show playing Friday at Slippery Rock University. The group's show kicks off SRU's 2010-11 Performing Arts Series.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University's Performing Arts Series begins Friday with the Golden Dragon Acrobats.

The group founded in 1967 has performed in all 50 states as part of its annual 200-performance schedule. Recent stops include the John F. Kennedy Center and Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C.

The troupe has been the recipient of the National Association of Campus Activities Entertainer of the Year Award seven times and received two New York Drama Desk Award nominations for its Broadway performances.

Other shows in the four-performance series are:

&bull "Ailey II," from the famed Alvin Ailey Dance Company, Oct. 29;

• "Scrooge in Concert," a revival of Dickens' Christmas story, Dec. 2;

• "From Galway to Broadway," featuring tenor Ciaran Sheehan and soprano Gay Willis in a tribute to Irish music, March 18.

All four series shows start at 7:30 p.m. in Miller Auditorium on campus. Dinners are also available.

Individual tickets for this event are available for $22 for adults, $20 for senior citizens and youths ages 13 to 17, $15 for children age 12 and younger, and $8 for SRU students.

Season tickets are $74 for adults, $66 for those age 62 and older and 17 and younger, and $28 for SRU students.

Dinners, tailored to suit each performance, are $24 per person, or $90 for four people. Reservations for dinner are due the Monday before each show and may be made by calling 724-738-4245.
