Ron Mesing of the M&M Express bluegrass band plays a Dobro at the 2010 January Ice Jam in Butler. This year's Ice Jam is set for Friday and Saturday at the Butler Days Inn.

This year’s January Ice Jam will once again bring people of all ages together to enjoy bluegrass music on Friday and Saturday at the Butler Days Inn on Route 8.

In its 14th year, the Ice Jam accommodates listeners as well as new musicians and veteran players.

With more than 2,000 people in attendance yearly, the Jam offers a stage area with more than 500 chairs for a large audience. Bands also gather to jam in individual rooms and even stairwells.

The Ice Jam originated 14 years ago as a way for bluegrassers to continue playing their music during the winter months. Most festivals are held outdoors during the summer months when bluegrass enthusiasts can find a venue almost every weekend.

About 32 different bands will donate their time and talent at this year’s Ice Jam, playing traditional, contemporary and gospel bluegrass music.

Admission to all events is free. Donations are accepted with proceeds benefiting the Bluegrass Relief Fund.

The Ice Jam begins when the first band takes the stage at 7 p.m. Friday. Music begins at 1 p.m. Saturday. Bands play for 30 minute sets until about midnight both nights.
