BYE BYE BIKE RODEO
Winners of the second Butler Bicycle Rodeo held July 17, 1975, were, from left, brothers Rich and Albert Heasley, 7 and 11, and Alan Courson, 15. Awarding bicycles were Alvin Gay of Joseph T. Black VFW Post 249, left, and Butler Police Chief Ronald Connelly. The objective of the event, besides giving away bikes, was to show children that adults in the community cared and to steer them away from abusing drugs. Prior to last year's rodeo, the city sold the host site, Island Park, to the Butler County Housing Authority and said it would no longer offer logistical support past 2007. This year marked the first time the event was not held since its inception. According to rodeo organizer Denny Offstein, Island Park sits in disrepair while awaiting construction of a community building. He said thousands of bicycles were given away by the rodeo over the years and that "it was a wonderful thing."
