Food shopping secrets revealed

Grocery shopping can be costly, especially if you have a family to feed. Woman's Day magazine shows readers how to save thousands on their grocery bills with secrets from extreme grocery shoppers — those who routinely slash their entire grocery bill by 50, even 60 percent.

• Getting it for less: Shop the sales and stock up on what you use a lot. Some extreme shoppers only buy what's on sale. They let the sale rotations dictate their purchases and rack up consistent savings of 50 percent or more.

• Embrace the store brand: Most of the time the store brand tastes just as good if not better than name brands.

• Add an ethnic market to your lineup: Rice, spices, produce and other staples are often lower.

• Think outside the box: Need milk? Check Walgreens, the corner convenience store and even the gas minimart — all three often beat supermarket prices.

• Serious couponing: Extreme savers match a cents-off coupon with items on sale or go to a store that doubles coupons.

• Strategic planning: Extend the time between trips. If you shop weekly, stretch it to 10 days. Once you settle into that habit, push it to two weeks.
