Butler will hold its Relay for Life from noon Saturday to noon Sunday at Butler Intermediate High School's track.

Entertainment includes food, bands, children's games, raffles, the Miss Relay contest, an Elvis impersonator, a butterfly release and a luminary ceremony.

Relay for Life is where people walk a track for 24 hours to fundraise and promote cancer awareness.

As part of the event, there is a survivors' walk and a caregivers' walk.

"It's just awe-inspiring to see 100 people on the track," said Linda White, a stage 3 colon cancer survivor who is walking in Relay for Life for the first time.

"People in front of you and in back and you're all wearing that purple shirt (that survivors are given with "Survivor" printed on the back)," she said. "And there are kids wearing it and older people... it's just awe inspiring."

Members of 31 teams will be taking the track nonstop, said Ernie Copper, a community income development specialist for the American Cancer Society.

He said Butler raised around $93,000 last year.

"We set a goal at Aug. 31 (2008) for $100,000 for Butler," he said. "Obviously that was before the economy took the nosedive that it's in, so we might not reach that."

Copper said that teams are composed of what people have in common — friends, family and co-workers.

"Each relay is a reflection of its community and the committee that puts it together," he said.
