Kaleidoscope 2013
SRU's arts festival returns

Slippery Rock University's 12th annual Kaleidoscope Arts Festival will have an opening celebration at 12:30 p.m. April 18, on the SRU Quad, though events actually begin Tuesday with a film and art exhibit.

The opening celebration will feature the Pittsburgh-based Get Down Gang, a dance crew representing breaking and popping styles, along with the SRU Jazz Combo. AVI Fresh, SRU's contracted food vendor, will provide lunch free to students.

Kaleidoscope will have events running through April 28.

New this year is an exploration of northwestern Pennsylvania coal mining culture and folk music. Jay Smar, who sings and performs on guitar, fiddle and banjo, will offer “Pennsylvania Coal Mining Songs and Traditional American Folk,” at 7:30 p.m. April 18, in SRU's Sheehy Theater, Maltby Center.

Highlights include “Children's Day” from 1 to 6 p.m. April 20; student dance; folk, jazz and opera concerts; theater presentations; lectures and an “Images of Buddhist Art” event.

The Hunts, an indie-folk band, will perform a café-style show at 4 p.m. April 28, concluding the 2012-13 SRU Performing Arts Series.

Comprised of seven brothers and sisters, the Hunts have completed seven U.S. tours. They have traveled worldwide for more than 10 years.

Last November, the group released its newest album, “We Were Young,” featuring 10 original songs.

In addition to being champion fiddlers, the Hunts are also world-ranked step dancers. A step-dancing workshop will be available to local children from 1:45 to 2:45 p.m. the day of the show for those planning to attend the performance. Registration is required and is available by calling 724-738-2018.

Performance tickets are $20 for adults; $18 for senior citizen; $15 for youths; and $8 for SRU students.

Many Kaleidoscope events are free, For more information, visit www.sru.edu/academics/colleges/chfpa/kaleidoscope.
