Doing the Dance
JEFFERSON TWP — Jim and Dorrie Weber met on the dance floor, and 13 years later they still are finding happiness there.
"I really never asked a man to dance," said Dorrie, 60, who met her husband at a singles dance in a church basement in Saxonburg.
"One of the girls I was sitting with dared me to dance with him. I danced with him," she said, explaining Jim had been working as a disc jockey there.
"He was really nice. This calming feeling came over me. I can't describe it."
"That night when she came up to the stage and asked if the DJ could dance, I had the song ready to play," recalled Jim, 53.
The song was "Chances Are" by Johnny Mathis — a beacon of their destiny.
"I walked down and embraced her in a nice slow dance. After that song was almost over, I went back up to that stage and I don't think I was ever the same since."
Since their first meeting, the couple has taken group dance lessons, enjoying their time via the swing, cha cha and waltz.
For a recent birthday, Jim bought Dorrie private lessons, which they attend together each week."I feel like Fred Astaire sometimes," Jim laughed.Although the Webers felt an immediate connection, they dated for three years before tying the knot.Jim proposed at a restaurant, where he said another wonderful song was playing."It was 'Unchained Melody' — my second favorite song," he said.The couple got married in the church where they met."I could not believe she exceeded all my expectations and all my hopes," Jim said.Although Dorrie is retired from working with disabled children, Jim continues to work as an aircraft mechanic for the Air National Guard."I can't wait till he retires so we can be together and do stuff all the time," Dorrie said."He is my best friend."
