SRU presents musical 'Spring Awakening'

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University will present the Tony-award winning rock musical “Spring Awakening” Nov. 13 to 19 in the University Union Multi-Purpose Room.

“Spring Awakening,” set in 19th century Germany, tells the story of teenagers discovering their sexuality. It juxtaposes 150-year-old conventions with teenage desires for freedom of expression.

The leading roles are played by Zachary Frye, a theater/acting major from Butler as “Melchior Gabor;” Emily Daning, a theater/acting major from Bartonsville as “Wendla Bergman;” and Earl Christopher, a theater/acting major from Uniontown, as “Moritz Stiefel.”

David Skeele, SRU professor of theater, is directing the production. Teena Custer, SRU instructor of dance, is the choreographer. SRU student musicians will perform live accompaniment.

Gordon Phetteplace, associate professor of theater, is the lighting and scenery manager. Andrew Hasenpflug, dance musician, is musical director.

Curtain is at 7:30 p.m. nightly from Friday through Nov. 19, with a matinee at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets are $7 for students and $12 for the general public and available at the Smith Center Information Desk and at the door.

The themes of this show are for mature audiences.
