Location: Northern Europe, island between the Greenland Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, northwest of the United Kingdom
Population: Approximately 306,694 as of July 2009
Area: 39,770 square miles, slightly smaller than state of Kentucky
Climate: Mild, windy winters; damp, cool summers. Average high temperatures are 36 degrees in January and 60 degrees in July
Terrain: Mostly plateau with mountain peaks, ice fields and a coast deeply indented by bays and fjords
Geology: Iceland has the most glaciers in Europe; 11 percent of the country is covered by glaciers. Iceland has about 130 volcanic mountains.
