Fashion show fundraiser will feature sets of twins
The audience will be seeing double at the Holiday TWINkle fashion show.
Several sets of twins will model their holiday finest at the show, set for Nov. 6 at the Treesdale Golf and Country Club. Proceeds will benefit residents of St. John Specialty Care Center.
Ruth Pfeifer, volunteer coordinator, has worked on the center's fashion show fundraisers for about eight years.
"In the past, we've had children, we've had men, we've had residents from the nursing center and we've had mothers and daughters," she said. "I just wanted to do something different."
With three sets of twins in her extended family, a twin-themed fashion show came to mind, she said.
The models were all found by word of mouth, said Pfeifer, who asked around in the community and ended up with even more volunteers than she needed.
A committee of about 12 volunteers coordinated the show, including Frances Grabowski, director of annual giving for Lutheran SeniorLife.
"This is a wonderful intergenerational fashion show," she said.
Walking the runway will be pairs of 4-year-old boys, 5-year-old girls, 11-year-old boys, 18-year-old girls and 25- and 30-year-old women.
Another set of twins dropped out at the last minute and were replaced with a look-alike mother and daughter.
The event will raffle off more than 45 gift baskets donated by local businesses, staff members and friends of St. John's. There will also be a silent auction and luncheon.
During the fashion show, each pair will model two outfits: a dressy holiday outfit and a casual look.
Clothing was provided for the adults by Dress Barn at Cranberry Mall and for the children by Land's End at Ross Park Mall.
The twins chose their outfits and had the option of dressing alike or differently, Pfeifer added.
Dan Meyers, Lutheran SeniorLife major gifts officer, will serve as emcee.
In addition to sharing a biography of each model, he will read excerpts from a personal statement made by each twin, Pfeifer said.
"I got some beautiful ones," she said. "They wrote something really nice things that you wouldn't think of if you weren't a twin."
St. John Specialty Care Center has about 300 residents, said Grabowski, and this event benefits their Secret Santa Program and Resident Activities Fund.
"Many of our residents don't have family, so it buys them a Christmas present," Grabowski said. "It also helps throughout the year with activities. We try to do things like go to a Pirates ballgame or go to the zoo or a museum."
The space can accommodate about 150 people, and Pfeifer says the holiday fashion shows are always popular.
"It's a wonderful event and it gets better every year," she said.
