4 money questions for every marriage

Marriage means sticking together through thick and thin — and that includes the size of your wallet.

Take some time to ask your spouse the following questions — and answer them yourself.

• What are your priorities when it comes to money?

Money is a complicated issue. Even if you both agree on savings practices, you may not agree on day-to-day spending decisions. Try to meet each other halfway, working out a budget you both think is fair for weekly expenses. Deal with the bigger financial decisions as they arise. Prioritizing and compromising are essential.

• How often should we talk about money?

Having a successful partnership is about more than just understanding each other, it is also about communication. Make sure you set aside a predetermined time each month to revisit and discuss your budget, investments and other financial issues. This way, you’ll never find yourself thinking, “I want to talk about it, but I don’t know how to bring it up.”

• What steps can we take to help each other?

Depending on each partner’s financial situation, there are a variety of decisions to be made regarding managing finances. Speaking to a financial expert is a good place to start, so you can get unbiased, third party advice.

• What are our financial goals?

One of the most wonderful parts about marriage is planning for your future together. Even if you’re paying off debt or rebuilding your credit, identify a few future financial goals. You’ll find it is much easier when you and your spouse communicate.
