Seneca senior's work at Pgh. gallery
PITTSBURGH — Seneca Valley High School senior Alex Lecce will have his senior project displayed at the Most Wanted Fine Art Gallery on Penn Avenue beginning Friday.
Hours Friday will be from about 7 to 9 p.m., and Alex will attend.
Alex, 17, of Cranberry Township said he will be featuring three paintings specifically created for the show.
The title of the exhibit is “Mars, Venus, and Pluto.”
“I chose to do this project because I never had a solo art show before, and I thought it would be a great experience but also challenging,” Alex said.
“I won’t be displaying a specific number of pieces; I’m going to be filling the space with as much art as I can fit in,” he said.
His artwork incorporates acrylics, oil paints, watercolor and pencil as media.
Alex said he worked with his art teacher, Jason Woolslare, who is a friend of the gallery owner, to bring this project to fruition.
Woolslare said Alex has probably “taken every art class available” at Seneca Valley.
“His subject matter has a consistency that is uncommon for artists his age,” Woolslare said.
“He has more finished pieces in his portfolio than any other student that I have worked with. I have no doubts that Alex will have a very successful career in the visual arts after high school.”
Woolslare said Alex’s work has a “darker tone and delves deep into the human condition.”
“Although Alex’s subject matter is often dark, he renders his work beautifully and really captivates the viewer to not only explore the surfaces of his canvas, but also to explore the inner workings of themselves,” Woolslare said.
Alex recently won numerous awards in the Scholastic Art and Writing competition. National medalists will be announced March 14. His portfolios also won a $200 Emma Munson Memorial Scholarship at the Scholastic-hosted event.
Alex has displayed his work throughout his school before, and he had one piece at the Most Wanted Gallery in January.
He said after high school he wants to attend an art school, though he’s not certain which one. Possibilities include the Maryland Institute of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago.
Alex’ artwork will be displayed at the Pittsburgh gallery through March 28.
He is the son of Gina and Dave Lecce.
