Phillips Gallery displays study in contrasts
BUTLER TWP — An exhibit of artwork by Slippery Rock University students is continuing through April 15 in the Mary Hulton Phillips Gallery at Butler County Community College.
The “Experiment” exhibition is part of SRU’s international collaboration between the university’s Fiber Art Studios and the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk, Poland.
Barbara Westman, SRU associate professor of art and a Poland native, initiated this collaboration in 2013.
The works present different interpretations of contrasts. A large variety of materials were used: textiles, paper, wool, wire, plastics, synthetics and bark, among other things.
Contrasting ideas are shown on two panels or two forms. Contrasts are found in the qualities of materials, such as tactile qualities, color, value and the arrangement or composition of materials.
Some artists focused on the contrast of two personalities, emotions, life events and ecology.
“Experiment” has been exhibited in Poland and at SRU, Indiana (Pa.) University and the Dixon University Center in Harrisburg.
