'Afterglow' Butler woman writes book on life's challenges
Jean Vaughn of Butler launched her book, “Afterglow — A Test of Human Spirit,” Saturday with an event at the Butler Public Library.
“Afterglow” is Vaughn's real life story. Her life changed forever when her youngest child, Melanie, committed suicide.
The story opens with Vaughn awaiting the start of the funeral for her daughter, and wondering how she got to this moment.
Vaughn goes all the way back to her own childhood to examine her emotional scars and continues through two marriages and life with four children.
“Life presents one with many challenges,” Vaughn said in a press release. “You can succumb to them and become devastated with life, or you can work through the challenges and learn how to not only survive, but thrive. The experience then becomes a lesson to help others overcome a similar challenge.”
Vaughn eventually studied with Twylah Nitsch, an elder of the Seneca nation, and learned “you contain all the answers within yourself. By observing all of nature, one learns how to discern the truth for themselves.”Vaughn is a retired Pennsylvania state employee. “Afterglow” is intended to be the first book in a trilogy.The 158-page paperback “Afterglow” was published in June by Balboa Press and is available for $12.99.
