Some snappy meals pack too much trans fats

WICHITA, Kan. — You know the drill: It's been a long, hectic day. You're tired — and hungry. But the last thing you want to do when you get home is spend a lot of time cooking.

So what's for dinner?

Sure, you could put the nearest pizza place on speed-dial or drop by a drive-through, but today many people would rather have quick options that are more wholesome and homey.

Walking through any grocery store, you'll find plenty of products that promise a homestyle meal in a hurry. But some of them aren't as nutritious as they may seem.

We asked Ann Hunter, a registered dietitian and faculty member at Wichita State University, to analyze some of the newest and most popular dinner options for families on the go.

• 1) Stouffer's Corner Bistro Grilled Chicken Italian Panini

Where to find it: In the freezer section

Cost: $3.29 for 1 serving

Prep: About 3 minutes in the microwave

Serving size: 1 package

Calories per serving: 350

Fat per serving: 17 grams, including 6 grams saturated fat and no trans fat.

Slogan: Grills in the microwave

Hunter's analysis: Of the products we tested, this was her favorite. "It's extremely tasty," she says. "It's only 17 grams of fat ... and 20 grams of protein is very good. It would be good for kids too, and something I think they'd probably eat." But she thinks one serving wouldn't satisfy a teenager's hunger.• 2) Marie Callender's Old Fashioned Beef and Vegetables Crock-Pot Meal

Where to find it: In the freezer section Cost: $6.99 for 8 servings

Prep: 5 minutes to combine ingredients, then 8 to 10 hours in a Crock Pot.

Serving size: 2/3 cup

Calories per serving: 150

Fat per serving: 4.5 grams, including 2 grams saturated fat and no trans fat.

Slogan: Inspired By Grandma

Hunter's analysis: She says this dish is healthy, but at just 2/3 cup, "the serving size is probably too small for almost everyone." The factors in this entree's favor? "13 grams of protein is good," Hunter says. "It doesn't have any trans fat and the sodium (550 milligrams per serving) is not as high as in many Crock Pot items."• 3) Main St. Bistro Salisbury Steak with Gravy and Mashed Potatoes

Where to find it: In the refrigerated section

Cost: $4.99 for four servings

Prep: 8 minutes in the microwave

Serving size: 1 patty with Z\v cup gravy and Z\x cup potatoes

Calories per serving: 440

Fat per serving: 28 grams, including 14 grams saturated fat and no trans fat.

Slogan: 8-minute complete meal

Hunter's analysis: "I think the label could be very misleading at first glance," she says, noting that the nutrition facts for the meat and potatoes are listed separately. "You have to add it up and some people won't." With 28 grams of fat and 1,270 milligrams of sodium per serving, "I would say it's high fat ... and the sodium is extremely high."• 4) Buitoni Whole Wheat Four Cheese Ravioli with Marinara Sauce

Where to find it: In the refrigerated section Cost: $6.04 for about three servings

Prep: About 8 minutes (cook the pasta in boiling water for 6 to 8 minutes and microwave the marinara sauce for a few minutes)

Serving size: 1Z\v cups pasta with ½ cup sauce

Calories per serving: 390

Fat per serving: 13 grams, including 6.5 grams saturated fat and no trans fat.

Slogan: Celebrate simple Italian goodness

Hunter's analysis: "I like the whole-wheat pasta," she says, adding that it brings a praiseworthy 5 grams of fiber to this dish. But it's not all good news: "Most of the fat in here is saturated," she says.• 5) Hamburger Helper Microwave Singles Cheesy Lasagna with Beef

Where to find it: On the shelf near the boxed macaroni and cheese

Cost: $3.19 for four servings

Prep: Microwave for 4 to 6 minutes

Serving size: C\v cup

Calories per serving: 210

Fat per serving: 4.5 grams, including 1.5 grams saturated fat and 1.5 grams trans fat.

Slogan: It's a snap! Just add water!

Hunter's analysis: This would probably appeal to kids, but one packet only makes a C\v cup serving. "A child would not find that to be enough," she says. "It only has 8 grams of protein. And it has trans fat — forget it." (Trans fat can raise your risk of heart disease.)• 6) Betty Crocker Complete Meals Chicken and Buttermilk Biscuits

Where to find it: On the shelf near the boxed macaroni and cheese

Cost: $3.49 for five servingsPrep: 5 minutes to combine ingredients and about 30 minutes to bake.

Serving size: About 1Z\v cup

Calories per serving: 280

Fat per serving: 11 grams, including 4 grams saturated fat and 3 grams trans fat.

Slogan: 5 minute prep!

Hunter's analysis: "Pretty good flavor," she says. "It's just not as healthful. ... Darn the trans fat." This entree has 3 grams of trans fat per serving — the highest level of any product we tested, and it only has 9 grams of protein. "There don't seem to be that many vegetables," she says, even though the photo on the package shows generous chunks of carrots and peas.None of these products should be the only item on your dinner plate, Hunter says. "You should make a meal around it," she says. She suggests pairing these entrees with milk, salad or vegetables and maybe some fruit crisp for dessert.
