A garden party in Butler raised more than $106,000 for the Community Health Clinic of Butler County. That is the largest amount ever raised at a special event for the clinic.

Themed as a 1920s garden party, 150 people attended the invitation-only event on June 2 at a private residence. Guests visited in the gardens and over the landscaped yards while enjoying beverages and hors d’oeuvres. They were entertained by violinists, a harpist and a jazz trio.

Four health care entities were honored. The awards were presented to recognize their financial support of the clinic.

Butler Health System was represented by Kevin Stansbury, vice president of business development and philanthropy. The health system provided initial funding for the clinic and then contributed $200,000 for the construction of the clinic.

It continues to provide yearly funding to sustain the clinic.

Henry and Elsie Hillman were present to accept the award given to the Hillman Foundation. A grant from the foundation helped to establish the dental services at the clinic and that support has continued through the years.

John Lovelace, vice president of UPMC Health Plan for You, accepted the award on behalf of UPMC. That organization also provides annual funding as well as supporting special fundraising events.

An award also went to Highmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield. The clinic received a $180,000 grant from Highmark in 2010 to begin specialized services for diabetic patients and to establish a dental clinic. This enabled the clinic to hire a diabetes nurse educator, a dietitian, a dental hygienist and a dental coordinator.

These services are particularly important because diabetes is one of the leading diagnoses at the clinic and because dental services are rarely offered to the uninsured.

Honorary chairpersons for the event were Jean Purvis, founder of the clinic, and Victoria Phillips Kelly.

The clinic at 103 Bonnie Drive, Butler, which opened in 2008, provides health care at no charge to uninsured working people in the county.
