CABOT — The Butler-Freeport Community Trail Council held a trick or treat and fundraiser event at the Cooper Station Caboose on Saturday morning.

Volunteers with the Council handed out candy and cookies and gave tours of the “haunted” caboose, which had been decorated for Halloween by Betsy Kennon and other volunteers.

“Last year when COVID hit, that was the first time in something like 30 years that I didn't get to have a big Halloween party,” Kennon said.

She got involved with decorating the caboose last year to keep up her Halloween spirit.

“The caboose is really cool. It's a real piece of history,” she said.

Chris Ziegler, president of the Butler-Freeport Community Trail Council, said that last year, the trick-or-treat event raised around $200 for the trail. Funds go to maintenance and upkeep.

“We've been purchasing a lot of signage, and we ordered new trail brochures,” she said. “The map shows where you are with 'You are here' stickers and where the trail heads are.”

The new signs will go up in the next few weeks.
