Walter Powell, formerly of Slippery Rock, is the new executive director of the 116-year old General Society of Mayflower Descendants in Plymouth, Mass.

Powell has more than 35 years of experience in the field of museums, historic preservation and public history. He most recently worked as a historic preservation consultant for Stone Fort Consulting in Mission, Kan., and as a visiting history instructor and interim director of the George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War at Shepherd University in West Virginia.

Other projects during his career include work with the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the borough of Gettysburg and the Conococheague Institute for the Study of Cultural Heritage. He also was a visiting instructor at Shippensburg University.

Powell graduated from Slippery Rock High School, Slippery Rock University and Kent State University.
