How many employees know their employer’s mission statement?
The employees at Center for Community Resources (CCR) not only know their mission statement, but they attempt to live up to it.
An important part of CCR’s mission statement is “to make a positive difference in everyday lives” which is a goal that employees work on outside of their regular duties. CCR employees have formed a volunteer/outreach committee that meets monthly to discuss ideas for community outreach. It has about 12 members but the activities are successful because many employees participate regardless of whether they serve on the committee.
Volunteer opportunities can be simple efforts such as bringing in pink Yoplait Yogurt lids for cancer research, clipping manufacturer coupons to mail to families on military bases or having a contest to see who could build the best paper structure out of donated paper that later was donated to Community Action for food banks. As of December, $22,766 of coupons had been mailed to a military base in Germany.
CCR employees also sponsored an active duty Marine through Soldier’s Angels and provided letters and two care packages per month.
They collect food for the Salvation Army at Thanksgiving and decorate a Christmas tree with hats, scarves, and mittens for children and adults. CCR employees have also sponsored a drive for past three years for winter coats and jackets to children and adults. So far more than 200 coats have been distributed.
Non confidential office paper is taken to recycling bins to raise funds for the community meals served at Katie’s Kitchen. Aluminum cans and plastic bottles are also redeemed. Money raised from recycling has been used to fill emergency requests received at CCR.
The volunteer/outreach committee works with other community groups to assist in their outreach efforts. For example, CCR employees have an ongoing collection of used eyeglasses for the Butler Lions Club that has yielded about 150 pair. All of CCR’s used cell phones and other phones collected go to a domestic violence shelter.
Employees have distributed 85 backpacks with school supplies to needy students.
Other opportunities for CCR employees include walking in the March of Dimes March for Babies, filling Easter eggs to distribute to veterans and collecting cake mixes for the Meals on Wheels Program.
The purpose of volunteer/outreach committee is to promote opportunities that focus on benefiting others, something that happens daily at CCR.
