PITTSBURGH — A Bermuda computer chip manufacturer was ordered to pay Carnegie Mellon University at least $278 million for infringing on its patents for more than 555 million chips the company imported into the United States.

A U.S. appeals court upheld the verdict against Marvell Technology Group Tuesday, but reduced the $1.54 billion in damages previously awarded to the university.

A new trial will determine if the company must also pay royalties on all of the 2.2 billion chips it sold.

Carnegie Mellon sued Marvell in 2009, saying the company violated two patents issued in 2001 and 2002 in its unauthorized sale of the chips.

The patents protected technology developed to increase the accuracy with which hard disk drive circuits read data from magnetic disks.

LATROBE — Spirit Airlines plans to discontinue nonstop flights from Arnold Palmer Regional Airport in southwestern Pennsylvania to Chicago and Las Vegas effective Nov. 12.Spokesman Paul Berry said Monday the flights from the Westmoreland County airport didn't catch on as they hoped. Daily flights to Chicago and Las Vegas started earlier this year.Airline officials made the decision after reviewing ticket sales and trying to drum up interest in the flights.Berry says the “handful” of customers who bought tickets for flights after Nov. 12 will be contacted to make other travel arrangements.Despite the changes, Berry said the airline remains “committed to Latrobe.”
