Pa. Cyber Charter School board OKs 41 job cuts

MIDLAND — The board of the Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School has cut 41 jobs after failing to do so earlier this month.

Only four members of the seven-member board showed up for a meeting Aug. 5, and they voted 3-1 in favor of the cuts — one vote short of the four-member majority needed.

Six members showed up Monday and voted 5-1 to cut the jobs, including 21 teaching positions.

The school announced it was cutting jobs last month after the school’s teachers’ union, the PA Cyber Education Association, negotiated a first-ever four-year contract for the school’s 140 teachers containing raises totaling 21 percent.

A Beaver County judge ordered the board to vote publicly after several workers sued following the July announcement.

Those workers will still challenge the cuts at an Aug. 25 hearing.
