Pgh. lawyer ends bid for attorney general PITTSBURGH — A Pittsburgh lawyer says he’s no longer seeking the Democratic nomination for attorney general, now that a longtime district attorney from western Pennsylvania is also running.David Fawcett said Tuesday that running against Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala would split the Western Pennsylvania vote against eastern candidates.The former Allegheny County councilman’s legal specialty is complex commercial litigation.Democratic Attorney General Kathleen Kane could still run. She faces perjury charges, and is fighting the state Supreme Court’s suspension of her law license and a Senate exploration of whether to remove her.

Shamokin teachers to resume strikeCOAL — Teachers in the Shamokin Area school district plan to resume a strike after the school board rejected an arbitrator’s report.The district’s 182 teachers had approved the deal and were hoping the board Tuesday would so the same. The board supported salary provisions, but wanted to continue negotiating health care.The union says the walkout is a continuation of a strike the teachers staged between Sept. 8 and Sept. 28.The collective bargaining agreement expired in June 2011. Terms were extended through June 2013 and the teachers have been working under the terms of the expired contract ever since.
