JOHNSTOWN — A year after a national shortage of firearms ammunition was being felt at sporting-goods stores, Pennsylvania firearms dealers say supply is catching up with demand.

Retailers have most of the popular deer calibers in stock, and the availability of handgun ammunition is improving.

There are a couple exceptions.

Dealers say the .243 family of rifle cartridges and the .35 Remington are in short supply as hunters load up.

George Evanisko of Doogie’s Gun Shop in Johnstown said manufacturers have produced a lot of ammunition the past two years.

Evanisko also said winter weather keeping people indoors should improve the availability of target ammunition.

Last year, Western Pennsylvania firearms dealers were hit by ammunition shortages for smaller .22-caliber, 9 mm and .380-caliber firearms.
