Orchid, bonsai show blooms at conservatory
PITTSBURGH — Orchids and bonsai, two of Phipps Conservatory's most popular botanical collections, have come together for the Orchid and Tropical Bonsai Show through March 13 at the historic glasshouse at One Schenley Park.
Colorful orchids are displayed among the ferns and palms in the Palm Court and the Sunken Garden.
The Serpentine Room contains the best of the conservatory's tropical bonsai collection, pruned and trained to achieve a harmonious balance of shape, texture and color.
Show design was completed by Phipps' horticulture, education and facilities staff with assistance from the Orchid Society of Western Pennsylvania.
The Garden Railroad, complete with operating trains chugging through miniature living scenery in the South Conservatory, is the design of Bob Vukich and will be on display through March 13.
Other gardens feature trains of different scales. All of the trains are surrounded by dwarf conifers, groundcovers, sedums and small-growing plants to reflect a larger scale natural landscape.
Phipps is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. with extended hours until 10 p.m. Fridays.
Admission is $12 for adults, $11 for senior citizens age 62 and older and students with valid ID, $9 for children ages 2 to 18, and free for children younger than 2.
