Paul Eugene Mershimer
Paul Eugene Mershimer, 81, of Slippery Rock passed away Saturday at Sharon Regional Hospital from complications resulting from Parkinson's disease.
He was born Jan. 31, 1935, in Slippery Rock to Charles Lee and Mary Elizabeth Snyder Mershimer.
He graduated in 1953 from Slippery Rock High School and went to honorably serve in the U.S. Marine Corp. on July 9 of that year.
Paul married Marguerite Ann Lehett on Aug. 22, 1959.
After his enlistment, Paul went on to Slippery Rock State Teacher's College, graduating in 1960. He then taught health and physical education, as well as driver education at Hickory schools in Mercer County. Paul became employed as an Erie Insurance Agent, operating out of his home until his retirement in 1995.
One of his accomplishments was being presented with a Dedicated Service Award for over 46 years of service to the Pennsylvania's Hunter-Trapper Education program.
Paul was an active Masonic member of the Grove City F&A.M. Lodge 603, and received his 50-year membership pin last summer. He also served as the president of the Butler Shrine Caravan 14. He was a member of the Center Presbyterian Church in Slippery Rock.
Surviving are Paul's wife of nearly 57 years, Marguerite, at home; his son, Kurt Mershimer, and his wife, Sarah, of Plain Grove, Pa.; his grandchildren, Emma, Luke, Reed and Micah; his sister, Georgia Bruns of Freedom, Pa.; his brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Mary Lehett of Hermitage; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; twin brothers, Don and Dale; his brother, Charles “Chuck”; and his sister, Anna Mershimer.
Paul and Marguerite enjoyed traveling, riding motorcycles and being with family. Most importantly, he dearly loved his son, Kurt, and his daughter-in-law and their precious four children.
MERSHIMER — The family of Paul Eugene Mershimer, who died Saturday, July 9, 2016, will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Smith Funeral Home, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock, with a Masonic service to be between 7 and 7:30 p.m. Visitation also will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday.Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. William Mumaw II of Center Presbyterian Church presiding. Interment will be at the Slippery Rock Cemetery.Memorial contributions may be given to the Center Presbyterian Church, 211 Center St., Slippery Rock, PA 16057.
