Trooper injured in scuffle with man over play sword

A trooper was injured in a weekend altercation at a Saxonburg store where a man appeared with what looked like a real sword, authorities said.

The sword turned out to be plastic, state police said, but before that was determined, troopers were called around 7:40 a.m. Sunday to the Dollar General on West Main Street for a report of a man there carrying a sword.

Troopers found the 34-year-old Saxonburg man with the sword over his shoulder. The weapon appeared to be real, according to a police report.

The suspect was told to drop it, and he complied, police said.

“While troopers were attempting to recover the sword,” the report said, “(the suspect) ran towards it to pick it up.”

A physical altercation ensued, with police trying to restrain the man. A trooper, whose name police did not release, suffered minor injuries to his hands and knees. Police said he went to Butler Memorial Hospital to be checked out as a precaution.

The suspect, police said, was placed into custody and taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for unspecified treatment.

Police said he is facing charges, including a top count of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer. Charges were not immediately filed.
