Middle East meltdown
Saudi Arabian police inspect burned-out vehicles Thursday following a clash between Islamic militants and Saudi security forces in Mecca, Islam's holiest city. Two militants and two policemen were killed in the fight. Violence in the Middle East was not limited to Saudi Arabia, however, as a car bomb explosion at a Shiite mosque in Baghdad, Iraq, killed eight and wounded 20. Also Thursday, a militant group claimed responsibility for shooting down a civilian helicopter. The crash killed 11 people, including six Americans.
